Catacomb

Failure’s like a sting. The honey bee can only sting once, and then she dies. Catacomb takes a dark, spiritual dive into the battle between human nature and mother nature. Set in a working greenhouse, it is the story of an addict and born again naturalist seeking redemption through the purest creature of all: the honey bee.
Written by Laena Brown; Directed by Katrina Darychuk; Scenic Design by Alexandra Lord; Performed by Laena Brown and Vincent Leblanc-Beaudoin with Associate Producer Pippa Johnstone - Stopgap Theatre Company at Trinity Bellwoods Greenhouse, as part of SummerWorks Performance Festival 2017.
"The production, directed by Katrina Darychuk, is ... very strong. Brown and Leblanc-Beaudoin are both very fun to watch, as they bounce around the small verdant space, especially during well-executed symbolic lifts performed on a large central worktable ... beautifully lit." - Jordan Bimm, NOW Toronto, Aug 5 2017

These bee hotel units provide shelter for native bee species including Mason bees, Leafcutter bees and Bumblebees. They were installed in this pollinator garden which will sustain them and other pollinators such as butterflies and songbirds. This Theatre Engaging Communities Project was made possible by funding provided by the National Theatre School of Canada. The project was completed by the creative team of Catacomb and volunteers from the Trinity Bellwoods community.
